A year-old woman presented with malodorous vaginal discharge and soreness that began one week earlier. She had dyspareunia, but no itching, dysuria, or lower abdominal pain. She was not douching or using any local intravaginal chemical treatment.
Click Image to Enlarge. Fetal ultrasound is a test used during pregnancy that creates an image of the fetus in the mother's uterus, or womb. During a fetal ultrasound, various parts of the baby, such as the heart, head, and spine, are identified and measured.
A pelvic exam is where a doctor or nurse practitioner looks at a girl's reproductive organs both outside and internally. This includes feeling a girl's uterus and ovaries to be sure everything's normal. Teens don't usually get pelvic exams. Sometimes doctors do pelvic exams if they think there's a problem.
A speculum Latin for "mirror"; plural specula or speculums is a medical tool for investigating body orificeswith a form dependent on the orifice for which it is designed. In old texts, the speculum may also be referred to as a diopter or dioptra. Vaginal and anal specula were used by the ancient Greeks and Romans and speculum artifacts have been found in Pompeii.

A two-year-old girl's mother was concerned that her daughter's vaginal opening appeared to be closed. The mother had noticed this a few months earlier when her daughter had severe diaper rash. The patient did not have urinary problems or vaginal discharge, and her birth and development histories were unremarkable.
If you have any of the signs or symptoms of vaginal cancer, you should see a doctor. If the Pap test shows abnormal cells, or if the pelvic exam results are not normal, more tests will be needed. This may mean referral to a gynecologist a doctor who specializes in problems of the female genital system. The first step is for the doctor to take a complete medical history.
Vaginal discharge is a common symptom in women and is most often completely normal and a sign that the vagina is functioning properly. Your vagina has a naturally acidic pH in order to protect you against infection. A healthy vagina regularly secretes discharge that in turn carries away dead cells and bacteria from your body.
